It's Friday, August 24th, and you're listening to Up to Date, our weekly recap of Science News.

0:07.1

I'm Kishore Hardy.

0:08.1

Indre is on leave for a few weeks, so we'll be having some guests joining us on Up to Date.

0:12.4

First up, it's probably the most enthusiastic person I know in all of science media.

0:17.4

He's formerly a host of DNews, Seeker, and the Seeker Plus podcast, and now is running his own

0:21.7

YouTube channel. Welcome, my friend, Trace Dominguez. Hello, Kishore. I'm super excited to be here.

0:27.1

Yeah, that's right on character, right? Yeah. You know what? I gotta stay on brand. That's what it is.

0:32.8

Thank you so much for joining us. You've been like the king of putting out essentially like a daily

0:38.6

podcast every day for the past what like six or seven years now. Yeah, something like that.

0:43.0

Yeah, about 3,000 episodes. So I imagine you keep up to date on science news. I do my best,

0:48.7

you know, we do an editorial meeting a couple times a week and dig through all the different

0:53.7

science news there is out

0:54.9

there. I have quite the feedly filled with RSS feeds. I don't know if anyone else still uses those,

1:01.3

but I do. So did anything catch your eye this week? So I grew up about the time that ADD was

1:07.5

being diagnosed everywhere. I was diagnosed with it in middle school and I have a

1:11.3

background in psychology. So something that caught my eye this week was about attention because it's a

1:15.8

big topic right now with all of the news media, having the short attention spans for Facebook and

1:20.6

Twitter and no one reads anymore and all of this. And I found this study that was a partnership

1:27.4

between Princeton and Berkeley and it's about how attention is an illusion.

1:32.8

Wait, wait, wait. I can't buy that because there's so much in popular media about how we need to focus our attention on X and focus our attention on Y and how we multitask and spread our attention.

1:46.1

You're saying none of that's real.

1:47.7

Well, what I'm saying is the way we think of attention is an illusion is not real.
