Summary

On June 10, 2003, 28-year-old Stephanie Wasilishin left her home in Prescott, Arizona, to go for a run. She never came back. The next day, her body was discovered on a remote trail. She had been sexually assaulted and murdered. The crime scene suggested a violent, brutal attack. Investigators collected DNA evidence and worked tirelessly to find her killer. But despite having DNA, despite extensive investigation, and despite following numerous leads over the years, no one has ever been arrested for Stephanie's murder. Stephanie was a beloved daughter, sister, and friend. She was vibrant, active, and full of life. Her family has spent more than 20 years searching for answers—waiting for justice that has never come. In this episode, Mandy and Melissa explore the case of Stephanie Wasilishin, the investigation that followed her death, and the heartbreaking reality that her killer is still out there. On July 9, 1993, just after 140 a.m., Russell Peterson of Sedona, Arizona, called 911 and reported that there had been a very bad accident during an argument with his wife Stephanie.

When he was asked to elaborate, Russell said that his wife had been shot and she was hurt very badly, though he couldn't give a straight answer when it came to exactly who shot her,

but he did suggest that she may have shot herself. Suspitions arose later when the couple's

four-year-old daughter told investigators that it was her dad who had fired the fatal shot.

Hey guys, and welcome to the Moms and Mysteries podcast, a true crime podcast featuring myself,

Mandy and my dear friend Melissa. Hi, Melissa. Hi, Mandy. How are you? I am doing well. Spring has

0:45.4

sprung and we're feeling great. Yes, the bumblebees are flying and buzzing and the flowers are

0:51.5

blooming and the pollen is everywhere. Oh yeah yeah. The pollen. So much pollen.

0:56.8

I saw mosquitoes yesterday. So I'm already like, okay. I remember now. I remember.

1:04.2

You have zero tolerance. You're like as soon as it gets, as soon as the humidity gets a little

1:09.1

too high and you see one mosquito, you're like, nope, never mind. Forget it. I don't want summer. No, absolutely not. Yeah. I've been team winter quite a bit this year. And it's mostly because of the mosquitoes. But we're going to conquer and make it through. And it will be a great year, I think. I don't know. Let's be positive. You're always positive. I'm trying it.

1:29.9

It is a great year. We're in March. Wow. Okay. You can't just say it's going to be a great year. It has to be a great year right now. It's a great year already. You get to like feel it in your stomach. Okay. It's going to be a great year. Speaking of great things, we actually did our first

1:44.2

mailbag episode last week, and you and I were both kind of nervous about how it would go.

1:49.0

And we didn't get too many stories, so we were a little anxious, you know, what if people were even interested in doing it.

1:55.9

It went so well, Mandy.

1:57.4

It was so fun.

1:58.7

Yeah, it was so much fun.

2:00.1

We got so much great feedback. And we've gotten so many stories. I cannot wait to do it again. Yeah, it was so fun. I made my husband listen to it. I was like, tell me what you think about this. You know, did this work and did it sound good or whatever. And yeah, he agreed. He said it sounded great. So which of course, he could just be lying and being nice to me. I have no idea. I know. I hope that he would not lie to me about that. I want my husband to lie to me about just about everything. I'm like, don't tell me what I need to hear. Tell me what I want to hear. Tell me if I'm, tell me if I'm just embarrassing myself, please. Oh, that's true. Yeah, that's true. Don't lie to me. Don't let your kid listen. That's the thing. If you let them, then it's over. Yeah, so it was a lot of fun. So thank you guys for sending in stories. Keep sending in stories. You can send it to Moms and Mysteries at gmail.com. Just put mailbag. And we'll have a new one in April. And I cannot wait to take that on. Awesome. All right. So we're going to get into the story of

2:52.9

Stephanie Wasolition this week. And this is a story where Haley actually had the opportunity to work

2:58.4

with a family member of Stephanie's. She was able to work with her daughter, Nikki. And we'll talk about

3:04.1

Nikki quite a lot in this episode as we get into it. Stephanie Marie Wasolition,

3:09.3

who often went by Stacey, was a woman whose life had been shaped by both joy and tragedy.
