My mom and dad were communists when I was born, and I became a communist too, of course.

They were revolutionary Trotskyists, and I was born and raised in the very left-wing city of Berkeley, California, in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I imbibed all of what the left had to offer, and I was a soldier in the cause.

Then, in college and then in graduate school, and later as a professor, I became a scholar

of the American left. The history of the American left became one of my specialties, and I taught about it for about 25 years.

I've never taught, until now, a course on the history of the American Left.
