There's almost a kind of an intellectual civil war happening, especially among younger

American Jews, because among younger Americans Jews, fundamental questioning of Israel and even

of Zionism is not that margin. So you have on the one hand some Jewish students

who you are more Zionist who feel like the pro-Palestinian

activism is very threatening to death.

And they see it as anti-submitted.

On the other hand, in these pro-Palestinian groups

and on these activists in these protests, you also have a lot of deal with groups. So, It's a real pleasure to welcome Peter Byynart to Bad Faith Podcast. You know him as the editor at large at Jewish Currents.

He is also an author over at the Bynart notebook onstack and is a professor of journalism and political science at the

Many people probably know you as one of the few. Thank you have also appeared on Democracy Now and the number of contexts since the events of October 7th.

And I think one of the reasons why you're such a compelling interlocutor in this space

is because there's been very open about your own personal evolution or a personal journey as someone who for much of their life

identified more closely with the Zionist project than you do now and I wanted to maybe start by talking a little bit about your own personal journey.

Sure. I grew up in a family where the idea that there would be a Jewish state was very important, especially

if my grandmother who had a really big influence on me as a kid.

My grandmother was born in Egypt in Alexandria. Her family were from the island roads in Turkey and originally before that many hundred years earlier from Spain.

And then of all things, the family had to leave Egypt and went to the Belgium,

Congo and then went to South Africa. And I think her life was really defined by

the transients and fragility of these different Jewish communities in places where Jews lived for a while but then
