Summary

We haven't given you, our non-paying listeners, a bonus episode since Christmas, so have a summer present. It's our bonus episode - originally for Patreon backers only - on 2004's Downfall, the acclaimed German movie (good thing there are subtitles because... y'know) about the last days of Hitler and his assorted hangers-on in the bunker as the Red Army grind their way into Berlin. Spoiler: he shoots himself.

It's a complex, flawed, fascinating movie, and both of your hosts have complicated feelings about it.

By continuing to be in the meeting you are sending to being recorded all right. Oh apparently they've

0:05.2

they've had some some some lawyers got involved in this whole thing apparently. So yeah. Yeah.

0:12.2

Probably. I mean, I would say it's never a good sign when lawyers get involved but we are talking

0:17.9

about the tech industries. Yeah. It's kind of like a libra shrugged. It's like, well, I mean,

0:28.2

the banks are terrible but they are dealing with Facebook and so yeah. It turns out the multinational

0:35.3

banks are the good guys in the situation. They are at least theoretically supposed to have some

0:39.6

rules that they stick by, you know. Yeah. Well, I mean, or like, you know, when the Red Army is

0:44.1

bombing Berlin in 1935, sort of well. Yeah. Is the Red Army a completely unimpeachable organization?

0:54.1

No. Well, I mean, Stalin, Stalin was terrorists. Stalin was one of history's greatest monsters,

1:00.0

but Hitler. Yeah. That's really, I mean, that's just that's just an argument winning move, isn't it?

1:06.9

Well, I mean, that that is the Godwin thing, isn't it? But Hitler, you know, because it is the

1:13.6

nuke. It's the nuclear option. It just wins the argument immediately. But Hitler, you know, Hitler

1:18.8

was on the other side of that. So, you know, whatever. Yeah, I mean, if you know, if one side is

1:24.7

Hitler, then pretty much by definition, the other side is at least preferable, you know.

1:33.2

If you have to pick a side, you know, the side that isn't Hitler is pretty much always the

1:37.7

best off. Yeah, non-Hitler is the one to go for. I would say generally.

1:42.8

The hard to fight a cat or example to that, you know. Yeah, it's like Robert Evans talking

1:49.6

about, you know, one of the episodes behind the bastards he was talking about, like, yeah,

1:54.0

then one of Hitler tried to commit suicide and his friend talked him out of it. And,

1:59.6

usually you think talking to someone out of suicide, you're universal good. Maybe if you're

2:05.6

afraid to sit there, go, yeah, no, that probably wouldn't find, you know, yeah.

2:12.3

Yeah, first world war, you know, 99 times out of 100, my, my exaltation to the
