Danny and Derek welcome back Brendan James and Noah Kulwin, of the Blowback podcast, for a tour through their latest season, which takes the show to Angola. They discuss how Angola became one of the largest and least-remembered battlefields of the Cold War, Reagan’s return to proxy wars, Cuba’s decision to send troops without Soviet approval, South Africa’s “total onslaught” ideology, the Reagan era’s fanaticism, its echoes in today’s politics, and what happens when the U.S. exports its wars (and mythology) across continents.

And we are very excited to welcome back to the podcast today, the blowback boys, the blowback bros.

And that is, of course, Brendan James and Noah Colan, who just released their latest season of the fantastic series, blowback, which I have been listening to for years. And many of you have as well, and link in the show notes, if you haven't gotten this last season. But this season is on Angola, and we're excited to talk about it. So thanks for joining us, guys. Thank you. Thanks for having us. I felt like that was a little drive time morning DJ, so you're welcome. So why don't we just dump,

1:11.8

dump, why don't we just jump right in and tell us why Angola and maybe how does this fit into

1:19.0

the larger blowback project that you guys have been doing for a while now? And kind of a thesis

particularly with Angola and around the time of this season is we've been providing a little bit

1:46.2

at first not knowing it a history of American Contras. You know, the foot soldiers of the Cold War

that we sort of subcontracted in the different hotspots across the globe. I mean, in the season on Cuba, we talked about

2:02.6

the Cuban exiles who became very important in different parts of Latin America.

2:07.7

There's obviously the Mujahideen that we covered in season four. And we haven't done a season

2:15.6

on the actual Nicaraguan Contras, but one could imagine us doing so.

2:21.2

And the contras this season were more or less slotted into the forces opposing Angola's

2:28.8

Marxist government at the time.

2:30.4

These would be the fighters of Unita, led by Jonas Savimbi, and supported by

2:36.6

apartheid South Africa. And there was actually a conference that was set up at Savimbi's
