Summary

Current Affairs editor-in-chief Nathan J. Robinson talks to Bhaskar Sunkara, the founder and publisher of Jacobin magazine and author of The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality. In this episode, Bhaskar tells us his vision for the future of radical media, gives his thoughts on whether Bernie Sanders is a real socialist, and explains how he started a leftist magazine from scratch—all the way back in 2010. Truly, Bhaskar walked so that Nathan could run. (If you ever get a chance, we really would recommend watching Nathan run.) You can find Bhaskar's book here, and Jacobin magazine here. This episode was edited by Dan Thorn of Pink Noise Studios in Somerville, MA. Good evening, current affairs listeners. My name is Nathan Robertson. I'm the editor of Current Affairs

0:03.8

Magazine, and I am here with a tremendously special guest. I am here with a man to whom I sort of

0:10.9

owe my entire career for reasons we will get into. I am here with Vasquez and Carr. He is

0:17.9

the publisher of Jacobin Magazine and founder of Jacobin Magazine. He is also the

0:23.9

author of the brand new socialist manifesto, and I am just thrilled to have him with me today.

0:32.5

Oscar, hello. Thank you for having me. That was a fittingly grandiloquent introduction. I don't think I deserve all that, but I definitely do appreciate it.

0:41.2

What I do is I really build people up in the intro so they feel they have to live up to it with sparkling conversation.

0:47.4

Exactly. You are the white don't king, if you will.

0:51.2

Thank you. Nobody has ever called me that before.

0:54.0

I don't think anyone ever will.

0:55.5

So this is the first.

0:57.3

That's my blur.

0:58.5

What I say, though, that I owe my career to you.

1:01.1

What I mean is that you ran a magazine, how five, I think Jackavan was founded, what,

1:06.8

2010 was it?

1:07.6

Yeah, late 2010.

1:08.8

It started as an online magazine in, in like September, October of 2010.

1:12.6

So we started in 2015.

1:14.6

So you've been going for five years at that point, half a decade, and built something, and I

1:19.6

looked at Jacobin and I thought, Jesus Christ, that is impressive.

1:24.6

You did a thing that nobody has ever done before, which, or maybe, you know,

1:29.8

this might be a little unfair, but you made left media fun and readable and, and colorful.
