Summary

I understand the challenges of societal norms pressuring neurodivergent children to conform to traditional friendship standards. It's important to embrace a more inclusive understanding that values each child's unique needs and preferences.

In this episode, I share insights on how we can help neurodivergent children identify their social styles and preferences, offering practical tips for parents and caregivers.

Together, we can focus on finding good friends for your child, considering factors like values, interests, and comfort levels in social situations. By individualizing support and tailoring strategies, we can create a more supportive and understanding environment for your neurodiverent kids and teens.

1:48.2

to think about social interactions in a certain way, that they must look a certain way. For example,

1:57.9

having more friends is better. That's what society tells us, the more friends you have, the better you are and the better you feel, the more friends you have, the more valuable you are.

2:12.6

You are considered less somehow if you don't have friends or you just have one. This weighs so heavily on

2:21.2

nerd-a-virgin kids. And as a psychologist, I hear kids and teens tell me they wish they had

2:28.3

friends. They wish they had more friends or they think they're bad and no one likes them and they need more friends to feel

2:37.0

better. I remember being young and feeling that very same way. I thought the kids that had a lot of

2:46.4

friends were better than me. I felt like I wasn't good enough because, you know, I didn't fit in with

2:52.3

those friend groups. I saw them everywhere too. They were at school. They were outside of school.

2:58.7

Sometimes I'd be invited to do things with a group, but it usually wasn't long before I wasn't
