Before my recent episode on latency in dog training, we took a social media poll on cue response times. 62% of people thought their dogs responded too slow. So, to help, this episode covers all the elements that create fluent behavior and what’s truly behind a dog’s response time to a cue. One of the most significant elements can be what we believe to be true about dogs. We’re also looking at the difference between true fluency and a dog's good grasp of a behavior.
In this episode you’ll hear:
• Why people often mistake partial understanding of a behavior for fluency.
• What I mean by generalizing a dog’s behavior to all contexts.
• About training my “high” Border Collie, Buzz, for agility.
• How to create enthusiasm and joy in your dog for behaviors.
• My six criteria for dog behavior fluency.
• Why instilling joy is always the first step in dog training.
• That “will” is a function of skill and environment.
• That our beliefs are not truths but personal perceptions.
• How we download and accept information from authority figures in our lives.
• Why the beliefs and labels of others aren’t your truths.
• Why I stopped giving dogs “time outs” over a decade ago.
• Why I think I’ve been successful at positive reinforcement dog training.
• What to do when frustration, anger, or disappointment sets in with your dog.
• That dogs aren’t mad or spiteful when acting out, they’re dysregulated.
• About fright, flight, freeze, or please reactions to stressors.
• The questions to ask yourself when toxic thoughts or emotions arise.
• Why we need to teach dogs from a place of environmental success in layers of joy.
• My steps for releasing limiting beliefs and toxic thinking.

0:00.0 | My team ran a poll on social media asking people what their dog's latency was in their behavior, |
0:05.0 | meaning how fast or slow do they respond to their cues? A whopping 62% said their dogs responded |
0:10.6 | really slowly to cues. And even though I'd already recorded a podcast on latency, I thought we |
0:17.0 | we need a deeper dive in this topic. So, let's go. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. You may or may not know that I am a person |
0:35.5 | who loves to meditate. I meditate every day, anywhere from |
0:38.7 | 20 minutes, which is rare, generally 30 minutes to an hour a day. And sometimes that's two |
0:43.9 | sessions a day. Sometimes it's just one. Why am I telling you that? Because a lot of the times |
0:48.0 | I will create an intention in my mind, just when my brain is empty, when it's all still and quiet, what can come from |
0:57.2 | the depth of it or from my direct line with, you know, the big guy upstairs. So I'll ask a question |
1:03.7 | often about you, the dog owner. How can I serve? How can I help dogs be better understood? |
1:09.7 | How can I help people have more success with |
1:12.2 | their dogs? And so, today's podcast is kind of like a download from head office. And I think the |
1:18.1 | first thing people need to understand with regards to how slow or faster if your dog responds to |
1:23.2 | the cues or commands that you say is the difference between fluency of a behavior and a good grasp. |
1:31.6 | So a good grasp of a behavior means it's a work in progress that the dog may have an idea. |
1:38.6 | Now, the problem with a good grasp is it often leads to statements like, he knows this. If you ever find yourself saying |
1:46.7 | he knows this or he can do this or he's done this so many times or anything like that, |
1:55.0 | you need to consider what the dog truly knows because a good grasp can be you have lured your dog into a position |
2:05.0 | or a behavior hundreds of times. It could be thousands of times in one or two different |
2:10.4 | environments. What is fluency? A behavior that is fluent is like any other language that is fluent. |
2:19.1 | It is become compartmentalized to a part of your brain where it's just second nature, |
2:24.0 | where you don't have to think about the words. |
