Harry Gray, whose sacrifice inspired me to write the book, Unknown Valor, a story of family,

courage, and sacrifice from Pearl Harbor to Iwo Jima one year ago.

In a country divided over politics in the pandemic,

these men remind us of a nation unified in crisis

and what it truly means to sacrifice.

I had the opportunity to sit down with many

of the courageous men who went overseas as young men

to fight for freedom 76 years ago.

I'm forever grateful to them for sharing their stories with me and to all of you for listening.

While writing unknown valor, I met Charles Goobish, an Iwojima veteran, who fought alongside my uncle, Harry Gray. They were foxhole buddies, and Charlie was with Harry during the final months of his life. 75 years later, he still gets choked up thinking about the day that he was injured in a Japanese mortar attack, and my uncle was just a few feet away when he was killed.
