Summary

Is “out with the old, in with the new” something you can do with parts of the Bible? The crew takes a look at a statement made by Andy Stanley, suggesting that Christians “unhitch” the Old Testament from their faith. Meanwhile, Carl digs into his historical archives and pulls a file of someone who made the same statement some 1,850 years ago.Imagine what Paul and the apostles would have had left if they had “unhitched” from the Old Testament and the Jewish historical tradition; what would Jesus have been talking about with the men on the road to Emmaus if He had done the same? Can we completely ditch the Ten Commandments, and affirm that Jesus gave only one command: to love one another? Listen in to hear how Stanley’s statements play out when the whole counsel of the Bible is considered.ResourcesGod Dwells Among Us by G.K. Now, a lot of Christians struggle with this.

1:07.0

They'll read the Old Testament and they will see a whole variety of laws that seem to be

1:13.5

obscure, outdated, maybe really strange. And I'm not talking about the Ten Commandments,

1:19.7

but I'm talking about some of the Levitical laws and the ceremonial laws that just seem very obscure,

1:26.6

very strange. And that will cause people problems.

1:30.3

They'll look at the dietary laws and wonder why we don't do those things anymore.

1:34.3

They'll look at some of the actions that God took against some of the pagan nations,

1:42.3

and they'll wonder if that God is consistent with Jesus, as he

1:46.1

is revealed in the New Testament. And the whole thing causes some Christians to stumble and

1:51.6

wonder, what do we do with the Old Testament? How do we read it? How do we understand it? Would it be

1:56.9

easier just to avoid it and focus on the New Testament?

2:01.9

Well, interestingly, Andy Stanley, who is pastor of what many believe is the second largest church in America, North Point Church in Atlanta, Georgia, has recently made some headlines once again for some things that he has preached.

2:19.3

And for his newest book.

2:26.7
