Summary

Prepaid cards are continuing to increase in popularity, often as an alternative to a bank account. In many cases they are advertised as ‘no paper work, no fuss’ but Money Box hear's that's not always the case.

A growing number of credit unions are offering loans which are repaid directly by child benefit payments to try to stop people getting into a cycle of expensive debt. Felicity Hannah reports on how they work in practice.

you have already paid. You load them up with money and then use

them like any other card. A very popular use is what are called currency cards. You load them

with dollars or euro before you go abroad. Kathy lives in Huddersfield. She'd done that,

and on her holiday to Tenerife, she tried to take 150 euros out of a cash machine. When it warned her of a charge, she cancelled

the transaction. She did that twice before finding a free machine, but then she discovered the card

had ring-fenced the 300 euros from her first two attempts, and she couldn't spend that

money all the time she was away. We were very concerned because we were lucky that we had access to other funds, but if it

had been perhaps a family or people in the situation where that was the only money or the

only sort of funds available to them, it could have resulted in absolutely ruining their
