Summary

“I grew up a witness,” Mike Rose wrote, “to the intelligence of the waitress in motion, the reflective welder, the strategy of the guy on the assembly line. This then is something I know: the thought it takes to do physical work.” Mike Rose died in August, yet the particular way he saw the world resonates more than ever before as our debates about the future of school and work only intensify. He argued with care and eloquence that we risk too narrow a view of the way the physical, the human, and the cognitive blend in all kinds of learning and in all kinds of labor. Mike Rose’s intelligence would enlarge our civic imagination on big subjects at the heart of who we are — schooling, social class, and the deepest meaning of vocation.

1:04.5	It doesn't have to be completely linear. And if you go down a dead end, you can back up and walk down another direction.
1:12.5	It's great. We have a lot of freedom. And, yeah. And digital editing is a fantastic invention.
1:19.5	We could all use it in our daily lives. I'm for that.
1:25.5	I know you're familiar with this show. And I think that there's such a way you write and think and work is very kindred to what I do.
1:35.5	It's getting at big ideas, but narratively.
1:38.5	I think you know that. But that's what I want to do. I want to talk about some of the important ideas that you think about and write about.
1:46.5	And also draw on who you are and what you know through experience as well. But again, I feel like I don't even have to explain that because that's the way you approach these things.
1:56.5	Well, thanks. It's nice to hear it though.
1:58.5	Yeah. And, you know, I really do want to have a big, deep discussion and not get too bogged down in some of the discussions about education that get hashed and rehashed like no child left behind.
2:13.5	I mean, I know you've written, you know what I mean? Thank you so much.
2:16.5	Because I want us to talk about something that can endure. And so we may talk about some of that near the end, but I really want to pull back from some of those things, those hot button issues of the moment.
2:31.5	Oh, man. I'll tell you. I'm hungry to do that because you can imagine the interviews that I do always get just nailed down to.
