Summary

David Sloan Wilson believes that evolution is not just a description of how we got here. He says it can also be a tool kit for improving how we live together. He’s taken what he’s learned in studying evolution in animals and is now applying it to the behavior of groups in his hometown of Binghamton, New York. His goal is to help people behave pro-socially — at their best, and for the good of the whole. This is Krista Tippett’s complete, unabridged conversation with David Sloan Wilson that’s included in the show “Evolving a City.” See more at onbeing.org/program/evolving-city/4720

Chris you just tell me when I should chime in. Okay. Hello, I'm a new voice. Oh, hello. Hello. Oh, you can hear me? Yes, I can. Oh, hi, this is Christy Tippett. Hey, Christy, how are you? Good.

1:22.0

I wasn't sure. Oh, let's see. I think the technologically adept people here are speaking to each other. So I'll be quiet for a minute. All right. Are you going to be interviewing me? Yes, I am. Okay, good.

1:37.0

I will observe her name is Christa not Christy. Thank you. That's all right. I'm really the only one who needs to know how to say your name correctly.

1:46.0

Well, I could just say your name too. I want to get that right. I think we may have. I don't know if we met. I think I know I've experienced you maybe at a temples and conference or something at Stanford years ago. Could be one of those. Yeah. And I, but I've been, you know, I've been reading you for a long time. And so I think Nancy wrote to this morning. Did you, did you get her email? Yes, she did. She said that you've been reading the neighborhood project.

2:15.0

The neighborhood project plus Darwin's Cathedral. Yeah, yeah. Well, and I, you know, I'd read Darwin's Cathedral years ago. So I was revisiting that. And so I really want to do a whole conversation with you. And this might become a program about you and, and your view of the world. And then the TR thing is specific to a program we're doing that has some any age funding.

2:42.0

I've also interviewed Ursula King for that. You know, she's, you know, one of these great T.R. Kenners. And so, so I, so what I want to do, but I want to get to T.R. just as kind of I think you got to him in your work. Yeah.

2:58.0

And, and that will be its own piece. And we'll see how this experiment works. Sure. And what's our timeframe? I think we have 90 minutes booked.

3:08.0

And we may not go that long. But what we get to do is have a real conversation. We obviously will edit it down. But we do make the entire conversation available online. And there are a surprising number of people who are really happy to listen to a long.

3:24.0

Thank heavens for that. Yes. I know it's countercultural, but it's good. Okay. Okay.

3:44.0

Okay. Is can Gregory, can you hear me? Yes, ma'am.

3:50.0

Chris is asking if you could turn down Mr. Sloan Wilson's headphones a little bit.
