Summary

Physicist Carlo Rovelli says humans don’t understand the world as made by things, “we understand the world made by kisses, or things like kisses — happenings.” This everyday truth is as scientific as it is philosophical and political, and it unfolds with unexpected nuance in his science. Rovelli is one of the founders of loop quantum gravity theory and author of the tiny, bestselling book Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and The Order of Time. Seeing the world through his eyes, we understand that there is no such thing as “here” or “now.” Instead, he says, our senses convey a picture of reality that narrows our understanding of its fullness.

Perfect. Yes, sorry I'm doing. Okay. Okay. Okay, we'll do.

Christa, do you need it? Do we need a sound check? Are we okay? Okay.

1:12.8

Carlo, could you tell me something, Benal, like what you had for lunch?

1:18.4

Yes. I just so I can get a sound check. Sure, of course. So I'm Italian, so I had the

1:24.4

very small breakfast, just a little bit of milk and stuff. And for lunch, I had to have a super

1:33.1

fast lunch because of the meeting, physics meeting, and we were discussing doing lunch, and it was

1:38.7

my turn to talk. So the other people were literally having lunch and I was talking. But I survived.

1:46.7

Okay. Okay. All right, Ben, I think we can just plunge in.

1:50.9

Perfect. You know, I think something, a quality that runs through all of your writing,

2:04.6

seems to be this kind of intertwined, interactive curiosity about

2:09.9

and commitment to both, well, physics as well as philosophy and history.

2:15.8

And I'm just wondering, I'm curious as we start, if you trace the roots of these passions and the

2:24.8

connection you see between them in your earliest life, like how do you think this was sparked by
