At the next night, thanks to the rockfall I'd caused at the original cave entrance, I had no choice but to return to the second opening, the one I had found in the cliff face, and to attempt another bat transformation in order to escape.

However, once I got there, despite having successfully performed the fly or dye manoeuvre the morning before, my confidence in doing it again

was, perhaps understandably, slight.

The first time had been out of necessity. I'd been on fire and chucked off a cliff by

Maroo. It's not exactly a choice, is it? But on this occasion I had no such dire inducements. I wasn't on fire. I wasn't even in pain. I was just stuck. Anyway, I peered out of the cave mouth and down to where the waves crashed on the rocks below, and my stomach

churned, and why wouldn't it? I was sane after all, throwing yourself out over a plunge

to certain death on the pretext that you might

for chance turn into a giant bat isn't exactly a natural instinct, is it? I mean, yes, I'd done it

before, but I didn't know how I'd done it if I had known then I might have had a bit more bottle and but I didn't

Maroo had said it was literally a leap of faith, that all I had to do was trust in vampire and know that he would save us.

And although I believed him, knew that he was right from firsthand experience, without the fly or die inducement, while I just couldn't do it.

The instinct for self-preservation is far greater than any faith, which is, as opposed, what sorts the man from the martyrs.

Anyway, with the flying option off the table, my only other way out of there was to climb,

so I turned my head from the rocks below to look up in the other direction towards

the top of the cliff. It was a sheer climb, must have been a distance for about 30 feet or so.
