With the release of ChatGPT late last year, the power of artificial intelligence had been put into the hands of the general public in ways it had never been before. Suddenly it seemed the future had arrived.

But along with fascination at the ability of the chatbot to mimic human writing, and even human thought, came questions – and concerns – from some of the biggest names in the tech industry.

Cade Metz is a technology reporter for The New York Times and author of the book, “Genius Makers: The Mavericks Who Brought A.I. To Google, Facebook, and the World.” He joined Diane to help explain this moment in A.I. and where it might be headed.

1:14.5	Okay, if we could start by having you talk about AI, what do we mean by AI? I realize
1:27.4	it stands for artificial intelligence, but exactly what do we mean?
1:34.8	The problem is that when people use that term, they apply it to almost anything and
1:41.2	everything. So anything that is vaguely automated, people apply that term to. So the term gets
1:49.1	muddled and people get confused. What does this term mean? And they're right to be confused.
1:58.5	I think we need to separate a certain technology which is having its moment right now from
2:08.5	all the other stuff that that name gets applied to.
2:14.8	Many people have used this new chatbot called chat GPT, right? A chatbot which can generate
2:23.0	text in many ways like a human. That technology is what we should focus on and related technologies
