Summary

Hunger is more complicated than simply "needing food."

Episode #257

πŸŽ™οΈ In this episode, Dr. Terri Lance is joined by Dr. Fung to explore the different types of hunger and how to respond to them effectively.

Building on previous conversations around The Hunger Code, they break down the differences between homeostatic, hedonic, and conditioned hunger β€” and explain why understanding these distinctions can completely change your approach to eating, fasting, and weight loss.

From satiety hormones and ultra-processed foods to emotional eating and social connection, this episode explores both the biological and behavioural drivers behind hunger and overeating.

When you boil it down to a single factor,

you're almost always going to be wrong.

And yet, we take this complex medical issue of weight gain,

0:11.7

and we boil it down to a single factor,

0:14.4

and it doesn't work for barely anybody.

0:17.2

And people say, well, it has to work.

0:19.7

It doesn't have to do anything, right?

It's like, it doesn't work.

This is Terry Lance, and I am joined by Jason Fong today. Jason, how are you doing?

0:41.6

I'm good. How are you, Terry? Very good. So Jason, we've been talking for a while now, going through

0:48.4

different aspects of the hunger code. We've spent some time looking at the old broken way of looking at things, looking at calories

0:56.4

and things. And we've moved into really examining more about understanding why we may be

1:03.7

overeating, why we're eating things that aren't helping us by looking at hunger. We've gone

1:09.8

through some information about the homeostatic hunger,

1:13.6

the hedonic hunger, and the conditioned hunger. So I wanted to ask you today if we could

1:20.2

get down to a few more nuts and bolts about what to do with those various types of hunger

in the real world. So now that we have more awareness,
