Do you know how your dog or puppy self-regulates or dysregulates? Or how your dog self-soothes? Most dog owners don’t, and it could be the root of behavioral challenges around your home. Dogs show dysregulation or self-regulation much like humans. Your dog’s responses aren’t the same as choosing right from wrong but a reflection of emotional regulation. Today I’m breaking down what healthy self-regulation looks like and how to recognize and help your dog’s coping mechanisms for a happier, healthier co-existence.

In the episode you'll hear:

• What you need to know before a visiting dog arrives in your home.
• How to recognize self-regulation and dysregulation in dogs.
• The definition of canine self-regulation.
• That dogs don’t choose right from wrong.
• What dysregulation looks like in dogs.
• That resilience to stress is a byproduct of healthy self-regulation.
• That puppies or rescue dogs cannot self-regulate instantly.
• The possible signs of dysregulation puppies and dogs display.
• Factors that contribute to canine dysregulation.
• About my own puppy’s and rescue’s dysregulation.
• How environment impacts self-regulation.
• About normalizing certain conditions to help dogs.
• What “destructive” dogs are really communicating.
• The ways puppies and dogs naturally self-regulate.
• About canine self-soothing behaviors and coping mechanisms.
• How co-regulation facilitates self-regulation for dogs.

Hi there, I have a question for you. Do you know how your dog or puppy self-regulates?

0:05.6

If you aren't 100% sure, you're probably in the majority. But after today's podcast,

0:11.1

you will not only know the answer to that question, but you'll know why it's so very important

0:16.1

and why the opposite of it, your dog's dysregulation, may be the root of a lot of problems that can be

0:24.3

solved around your home.

0:35.3

Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape by Dog. And if you're watching this on YouTube,

0:40.1

go ahead and hit that like button. If this is a topic, you have some interest in. First,

0:45.9

let me define self-regulation. Funny enough, it's very similar in humans as it is in dogs. It's

0:52.6

pretty much the same in all animals. It's the

0:55.0

animal's ability to show control or to be able to manage their responses, reactions,

1:02.7

emotions, energy states, and bodily functions, quite honestly. It's the dog's ability to

1:08.7

choose the desired response over the undesired response. And I say

1:13.4

it like that because if I said it was the dog's ability to choose right from wrong,

1:18.3

there's an implication there that the dog knows what's right or what's wrong. What we want is

1:23.4

for them to choose what we desire. And by keeping that in mind, it's not going to be right

1:29.2

or wrong. The dog's never going to be right or wrong. The dog just has the ability to choose

1:33.9

what you desire, which is a human thing, which they have to learn when they live in our world.

1:39.8

And it's up to us to educate them. So, self-regulation is the dog's ability to make those decisions.

1:47.2

Think of a child patiently waiting their turn while other children go ahead of them,

1:51.2

or a child not throwing a tantrum in a checkout line when their mom says no to getting a candy bar

1:58.1

or any child's ability to deal with disappointment without having a

2:01.6

complete meltdown, but rather having a positive outlook on that situation and that frustration
