Dogs experience seven developmental periods, from puppyhood to adulthood, and it's important we understand each. I'm covering the stages, what they mean for our dog's emotional growth and how we can build skills and confidence for the dogs in our lives. Knowing your puppy's or dog's current stage helps overcome behavior difficulties and guides your training choices.

In the episode you'll hear:

• The four criteria for deeper insight into a dog’s development phases.
• How expectations of ourselves and our dogs should be distinct.
• The three culprits of ‘dog training gone wrong.’
• The critical importance of understanding a dog’s motivations.
• Why the environment you’re training in always wins.
• The difference between a willing dog vs. dogs being labelled as wilful.
• That dogs are always doing the best they can.
• Stage 1 Dog Development: Neonatal (co-regulation from mother)
• Stage 2 Dog Development: Transitional (2-4 weeks old)
• Stage 3 Dog Development: First Socialization Period (4-7 weeks old)
• Stage 4 Dog Development: Second Socialization Period (8-12 weeks old)
• How mother dogs discipline their puppies through play.
• Why it’s best to keep puppies together for at least nine weeks.
• That the first ‘puppy fear period’ may begin at 8 to 12 weeks.
• Why relationship games for bonding are critical when a puppy comes home.
• How a puppy temporarily attaches themselves in a new or overwhelming environment.
• Stage 5 Dog Development: The Juvenile Period (3mos -6mos old)
• The importance of managing environments as a puppy’s confidence, independence and curiosity grows.
• Stage 6 Dog Development: Adolescence (6 - 18 months old)
• That the more informed dog owners become, the smarter the dog becomes.
• Stage 7 Dog Development: Maturity Period (18 months - 3 years old)
• Why focusing on a dog’s emotional well-being is as important as tricks, sports, and behavior.

Did you know there's seven developmental periods in a dog's life from birth to adulthood?

0:04.7

And today, I would like to look at those seven developmental periods with the lens of four

0:10.5

critical criteria. Now, you might be saying, oh, Susan, I don't have a puppy. I know today is

0:17.6

going to be very eye-opening to those of you, even with adult dogs, especially those

0:21.8

of you with rescue dogs, knowing how you can maybe reach a dog that has been difficult

0:27.4

to break through up until this point.

0:41.4

Hi, I'm Susan Garrett.

0:43.2

Welcome to Shape by Dog.

0:47.2

Four critical elements that we are going to be talking about today.

0:51.4

And I think these are going to be critical to every dog owner. I'm going to be walking you through the stages of development of a puppy from birth

0:55.5

to adulthood, but these four critical elements are going to be eye-opening to you as I put them as a

1:04.1

filter or a lens over each stage. Okay, so let's cut right to the chase. What are those four

1:10.4

critical elements?

1:11.8

The first one is your expectation. As a dog owner, as a pet owner, your expectation of your dog,

1:20.7

your expectation of yourself. Super important that you keep the two of them distinct, that

1:27.3

what are you expecting of your

1:29.2

dog's behavior at this moment? What are you expecting of yourself to help your dog achieve

1:36.2

the ability to give you that behavior? Now, when dog training goes wrong, it's always

1:42.8

one of three things. Number one, it's the skill.

1:47.1

And it's going to start with your skill. Your skill as a dog trainer to convey to your dog

1:52.9

how to do exactly what you want them to do without having any kind of bribery or reinforcement

2:00.2

on them.
