In late August 1619 a ship arrived in the British colony of Virginia bearing a cargo of

20 to 30 enslaved people from Africa.

Their arrival led to the barbaric and unprecedented system of American chattel slavery that would last

for the next 250 years. This is sometimes referred to as the country's original sin,

but it is more than that. It is also the source of so much that still defines the United States.

It is our origin story. It is where we begin to define what it is and what it means to be an

American. Today I'm joined by Nicole Hannah Jones here on the podcast. She is a Pulitzer prize

winning reporter covering racial injustice for the New York Times magazine and she is the creator

of the 1619 project which seeks to reframe United States history by placing the consequences

of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the center of this US historical narrative.
