Summary

How Enneagrams can help YOU! This week, JVN dives into the world of the Enneagram with coach and expert, Courtney Smith. This is the personality system that  doesn’t just describe your behavior… it describes your motivation. JVN learns their type and discovers why two people who look NOTHING alike (hi history!) can actually operate from the exact same psychological blueprint. We’re talking: What the Enneagram actually is (and what it definitely is not). The 9 types and their core fears + desires. Instincts — the part that explains your relationships, stress, and habits. Why people-pleasing and codependence show up. How mistyping happens (and why most of us do it). And yes… JVN’s official type reveal.  BIO: Courtney Smith combines her experience as a management consultant with her expertise in a variety of tools and practices (including the Enneagram) to offer coaching and consulting services tailored to the individuals and organizations she works with. She is committed to helping all of us see how we unwittingly limit our lives and how to unlock more present, intentional, and richer ways of being in this world. The best way to access her tools now is by joining her new newsletter. Courtney works with a variety of clients one-on-one to identify places in their lives where they feel stuck and would benefit from an outside perspective. Using the Enneagram, somatic practices, and other pragmatic tools, Courtney helps her clients break through their patterns and limiting beliefs, and more fully experience aliveness, connection, integrity, appreciation, effectiveness, authenticity, clarity, support, and freedom. Hey, better babes. Welcome back. I'm Jonathan Van Ness. And today we are taking a personality field trip

0:05.4

to the land of the Inneagram. I have been fascinated with Inneagram since I was first introduced to them a couple years ago.

0:12.3

I want to get deeper. I want to understand what Enneagram I am. I want you to understand what

0:16.5

aneagram you are. So we are understanding Enneagrams better today. We're getting to know ourselves

0:21.2

better today. We are healing up in this bitch. And we are healing and learning about enneagrams

0:26.2

with an expert in the enneagram field, Courtney Smith. Let's get to our conversation. Courtney, how are

0:32.5

you? Welcome to getting better. Hi. How are you? So a few things right off the bat. Stunning eyes. I love your fringe. You are gorgeous. Okay? Just like your look is amazing. Second thing. I'm going to come here all the time. You're always welcome. Second thing, my dear friend Kate, who I love so much, she is the creative director of J.B.N. Hair. She's just amazing person.

1:12.1

She's the one who turned me onto enneagrams. Okay. She was like, this is what an aneagram is. It was like back in like maybe 2022 or 2023. And she was like, I'm pretty sure you're this. And I'm pretty sure that like these people are that. So she was just like teaching me about like what anagrams are and like how they're used and stuff. and I was like, ooh, enneagrams.

1:12.6

So I've been really curious about eneograms are and like how they're used and stuff and I was like ooh enneagrams so I've been really curious about anyograms ever since okay and then we learned about you and we were like honey

1:17.9

Courtney's got to come on and teach us about an anagrams so first things first for the beginners

1:22.6

myself included what is an an aneogram okay so the aneogram is a symbol. It's a circle and it's got nine numbers that go around it and then a bunch of lines on the inside.

1:35.3

So when people say aneogram, I want you to think that symbol.

1:39.3

Aniogram means, anya means nine, gram means map. And so this symbol with nine numbers going around it is a symbol

1:49.2

that captures nine different ways of being or making sense of what it's like to be a human being

1:56.6

and so we talk about it shorthand in terms of like, this is your personality. You're a two,

2:02.6

you're a one, you're a four. But it's actually deeper than that. It's not just, hey, you're

2:08.8

extroverted or hey, I always run 10 minutes late. Maybe you run on time, whatever. It's actually

2:14.4

a level deeper. And it's how do you make sense of the world? How do you make

2:18.7

meaning of the world? And because of that, how do you show up in the world?

2:22.6

Why do people get so obsessed with it in this good way? Is it just because it does kind of

2:26.0

bring on this like sense of resonance and understanding and community too?

2:31.0

Yeah, I think there's a couple things. The first is there's both, there's a feeling
