Summary

Are you a parent or professional of differently wired children?

We NEED to understand anxiety in differently wired children.  Anxiety is more likely to occur in children diagnosed with Autism and/or ADHD. It can also be mistaken for challenging behavior. Anxiety is so powerful that it can actually outweigh rewards and significantly impact social interaction. Differently wired children often struggle to communicate their thoughts, feelings and even their needs - Of course, that would be anxiety-provoking! I also dig into how anxiety can negatively impact academic performance.

In this episode, You'll learn the signs of anxiety, what variables lead to anxiety and how to help differently wired children cope.

differently wired kids, I would say that anxiety is one of the most important things

0:24.2

to look at, to understand, and to help them through. It impacts everything. School, home,

relationships, you name it. Please take time out of your busy schedule and make sure to listen to this important

podcast. I'll see you there. Bye-bye. Welcome to the WIRE Differently podcast where we chat all about

Thank you for joining me today. We are going to talk all about differently wired children

and anxiety. And we all experience anxiety at one point or another. Some of us probably

1:14.9

daily. But it's different for differently wired children because anxiety for them can be debilitating.

1:23.6

And it happens a lot. Over 40% of differently wired children also meet clinical levels of anxiety

1:31.1

or at least one anxiety disorder. They also have trouble just emotionally regulating themselves.

1:38.7

Another reason why it's important for us to talk about anxiety is because they have trouble communicating what they need

1:47.1

and what they want in a way that makes sense to us.

1:52.9

Anxiety also impacts their social ability. A lot of them have a history of being rejected by peers. And that can create a lot of anxiety

2:03.7

so much so that they just don't think it's worth it to try to make friends anymore.

2:09.5

Anxiety, and I think this is such a big one, it's often mistaken for challenging behavior.

2:16.7

So let's just look at a couple examples. What if you

2:21.5

really struggled with certain schoolwork or you had an overwhelming feeling when you were asked

2:31.1

to do a lot of things at once that were maybe confusing.

2:36.9

Maybe you avoid it.

2:38.0

Maybe you escape it.
