| 0:00.0 | I'm Brian Lehrer. This is my daily politics podcast from WNYC Studios. This is a weekend special. |
| 0:14.6 | The biggest story to me from the 2020 census numbers that came out this week was not that New York and California and a few other |
| 0:23.0 | states each lost a seat in Congress or that Florida gained one and Texas gained two and a few |
| 0:29.5 | others gained one. Those things matter. They may actually matter to the control of Congress, |
| 0:34.5 | so it's really big in that respect. But as a census matter, they are incremental, |
| 0:39.6 | and all those states grew in population. The biggest story from the census to me was how many |
| 0:46.9 | people left Puerto Rico. The population of Puerto Rico now is 400,000 people fewer than it was in 2010. |
| 0:57.3 | The island lost a whopping 12% of its population. |
| 1:00.7 | No place else comes close. |
| 1:02.4 | Only two states lost population at all. |
| 1:06.2 | West Virginia declined by 3%, Illinois by just one-tenth of 1%. |
| 1:11.5 | So Puerto Rico losing 12% of its population over the last decade is in a class by itself. |
| 1:17.7 | So what happened? |
| 1:18.8 | And what does this exodus mean that Puerto Rico needs? |
| 1:23.0 | And back with us now is Alana Kassanova Burgess, host of the WNYC and Futuro Studios podcast LaBrega |
| 1:31.7 | and on the media producer. |
| 1:35.1 | Hi, Alana, welcome back to the show. |
| 1:36.9 | Hi, Brian, good morning. |
| 1:38.8 | I guess I should ask first, do you have reason to believe that this census count is accurate? |
| 1:46.0 | That's a good question. I mean, there was a problem with the process in Puerto Rico |
| 1:51.0 | for a while. |
| 1:53.0 | It seemed like only 30% of homes had responded. |
