so over a decade ago. I have learned so much about grief from Jan. Because Jan wrote the book

Grief Day by Day, Jan lost her amazing husband, Arty, almost 12 years ago, and Arty was hilarious

and brilliant and stubborn. I mean, he could be a real son of a bitch. Arty went from being a homeless,

alcoholic to becoming one of the pillars, one of the granddaddies of alcoholics anonymous

in the United States. Both Jan and Arty's life stories are so full of surprises that it's no

wonder Arty's death hit Jan so, so hard. She would tell me about grief attacks, about suicidal

ideation, about her guilt, about not having done this or said that, about the doctor who told her

she should not be grieving anymore after six months. I still get pissed off about that story,

about the ways that she reconnected to some aspects of her face, but only parts,
