Summary

Rich Correll is an avid Sci-fi, fantasy, and horror movie fan, and thanks to his incredible career in Hollywood (both as an actor and director), he’s amassed quite a collection of real film props, costumes, and other special efx memorabilia. About half of his collection is on display at his museum, Icons of Darkness in Hollywood. Rich talks about the rare items, his favorites, and the most popular among fans including incredible pieces from Aliens, Star Wars, Terminator, The Shining, Planet of The Apes, Jurassic Park, Dracula, and The Thing. He explains how he finds things, and the detailed process he utilizes to restore them to their original state. He shares which are worth the most, which are the most rare, and why it’s both extremely difficult and extremely important to preserve this part of cinema history. And it's incredible. Basically, just so I can give an overview, is it's got probably the best collection of screen worn costumes, props, monsters, gore, everything you could ever really want if you're a movie fan.

0:58.0

Rich, first of all, how long have you been here for? Because this place is like an untapped treasure for Hollywood for sure.

1:04.0

We moved in here just under two years ago. This coming the end of September will be here for two years.

1:10.0

And then we're going to move all this stuff to Vegas. So it's going to be in a much bigger version of this.

1:15.0

Because it's funny, it's people looking to see all this stuff and they go, oh my god, there's so much stuff.

1:19.0

I have like twice as much stuff. So this is only half of the collection that you have.

1:24.0

So how did you start amassing such a collection? Because this is a high-tech and just so you guys know we're sitting in here right now and I'm looking right now at Alien, Star Wars, Terminator, Harry Potter.

1:36.0

I mean, that's just the stuff that planted the apes. These are just stuff I can see right from my view right now. This place has got everything in here.

1:42.0

Right. When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to be, I was an actor, you know, and kid actors were kind of dime a dozen, but I was lucky enough to get hired as a regular on a show called Leave It The Beaver.

1:54.0

Was your character? I played a guy named Richard Rickover. He was kind of like the Eddie Haskell of Beaves friends.

2:00.0

You got a whole of the podcast that we need to talk about your Hollywood experiences, but continue.

2:03.0

Okay, so anyway, when I was working on Leave It The Beaver, Jerry Mathers would play Beaver.

2:07.0

I think I was three weeks older than Jerry. We were literally like clones. We just loved all the same stuff and we had a great time together.

2:14.0

He's still one of my best friends. I was best man in his wedding. We loved horror movies and here we were at Universal, where they made all the horror movies.

2:22.0

So we used to say to our makeup guy, hey, you know, we were 10 years old, you know, hey, can you take us to makeup lab?

So finally, the guy said, yeah, okay, come on boys, let's go.

2:31.0

So we went up there and we saw all this great stuff that we recognized from, you know, watching the old movies, but we were amazed at what they were throwing in the trash.

2:40.0
