More than 5,000 people are known to have died and thousands more are missing after entire neighbourhoods disappeared under tsunami like torrents of water unleashed by the bursting of two dams.

Many have been buried in mass graves, even as bodies continue to be recovered from the sea and rescue teams search through the rubble of collapsed buildings hoping to find survivors.

Johar Ali is a Libyan journalist in Istanbul whose family are in Dürner.

My friend, I'm staying with him right now to support him because I heard the news of the death of his full family, his mother, his father, his two brothers, his sister, and his newly married wife, which he sent to Libya to visit his family just two weeks ago.

And his little kid, whose eight months old, all of those died, all of his family's dead.

Some Libyans have voiced frustration at the country's political divisions have hampered eight efforts.

Libya is divided between two rival governments, one operating in the capital, Tripoli and another in the east.
