a group of ordinary people,

most of them middle-class professionals,

are learning to shoot,

to defend themselves against enemies

who may include fellow Ukrainians.

I'm Tim Hewall,

and for today's assignment on the BBC World Service,

I've come to a paramilitary training camp

in the west of the country.

I'm meeting the patriots who are determined

to fulfill their dream of a strong,

united, independent nation,

even at the risk of getting involved in a civil war.

It's quite a surprise here

to find a group of men in military fatigues

doing guerrilla warfare,
