Welcome back in today's episode. We are talking about the number one skill that will allow

you to grow through the recession. And what's so interesting is thinking back to the last time that I was leading a team and company through a recession.

The last time that I experienced this I was managing a team of about 35 in six locations for a Fortune 500 firm.

And I was on my way up, I think at that point I was maybe an area vice president so I was not at the

peak of my career but I was on my way up climbing the ladder and I remember that the

whole world was collapsing down around us because I was in the people

business, the staffing business, and so we were on the front lines of everything.

And the vast majority of our competitors went out of business completely and our

major competitors shot a massive, massive amount of branches and locations laying off hundreds of people as did my company as well.

And you know I remember going through this and I remember that I committed to my team that we would not let anyone off and I committed to my

team that we would not close any branches down and I was the person that was

responsible for coming up for coming up with a profit plan and designing it,

leading the team through it and executing it. And I was the person that essentially would have to decide whether or not branches would close and people would be laid off

dependent upon the level of profitability and here we are again

Here we go again, right? And you know in going through that recession in 2008 and 2009 it happened so unbelievably quickly in our space because the first thing that companies do is lay off people and cut jobs and that was the space that I was in.

But I remember that in going through that we pivoted you know I basically went to my team and I said you're gonna think I'm completely crazy

We're gonna do something that's never been done before we're're going to focus on this sector that we as a

company had not even been playing in. We went after offers that were 100 times more expensive than what we had been selling, a much higher level

skill set, bigger investment, and we pivoted our way to profits and we had one of the most profitable
