Environmental groups had already criticised the planned hosting by the United Arab Emirates, one of the world's biggest producers of oil and gas of the Global Climate Talks COP28 in November.

Now there's further concern following the announcement that the person appointed as President of the summit is the head of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

Sultan Ahmed Al Jabeer's office said he'd play a central role in building consensus at the COP28 conference.

Sultan Ahmed Al Jabeer, who has been appointed by the United Arab Emirates to lead this year talks, is the first chief executive officer of an oil company to take on this role.

He is also, it should be said, a minister in the UAE government and also has been their climate envoy for the past couple of years.

He says he'll bring pragmatism, realism to the job, but it is the job of President of very impartial role where he has to gather all sides to try and forge an agreement.

During the talks that will take place in Dubai later this year.

As you could imagine, there has been a lot of reaction from environmental campaigners who feel that someone of his role who hasn't, who isn't going to stand down from his role as we understand it at the moment.

It does, it is conflicted and that there's a conflict of interest here.

As I said, Mr Al Jabeer has said he's going to be pragmatic, he's going to bring a look for solutions and he's had some support as well from people such as the former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, who says he has deep diplomatic and commercial experience.
