Here's your closing bell brief for Wednesday, October 1st. I'm Catherine Sullivan for the Wall Street Journal.

U.S. stocks finished slightly higher today after the government shutdown began after midnight.

The Dow was up just a tenth of a percent, while the S&P 500 was up 0.3 percent, and the NASDAQ was up 0.4%.

Markets opened lower, but recovered during the day, led by a rally

across the pharmaceutical sector after the White House unveiled a direct-to-consumer drug-buying website

called Trump RX. Shares of both Pfizer and Merck were up about 7% each. Gold futures set another

record high, while both treasury yields and the dollar declined.

A report on private sector payrolls showed that employers unexpectedly shed jobs last month.

Among other companies, shares of lithium America's surge 23% on news that the U.S.

government would take a 15% stake in the Canadian company and its Nevada mine.

AES shot up almost 17% following a report that BlackRock owned global infrastructure partners

is close to a $38 billion takeover of the utility group.

Shares of META fell 2% after the company said it will use people's AI

chatbot conversations to personalize ads and content. And Corteva shares dropped 9%

after the agriculture company announced plans to split its seed and pesticide businesses.
