During this week's lecture in history, you will learn how refugees surfed an important symbolic

function during the Cold War. They demonstrated their desire for democracy over totalitarianism and their desire for capitalism over communism.

Some refugees went through extraordinary lengths like building underground tunnels,

jumping over fences and walls, and in some cases even built hot air balloons to fly them across international borders.

Hi, I'm Juan Zapata, a production assistant here at C-SPAN Radio, and this week a lecture

from Cornell University History Professor Maria Christina Garcia.

She provides more insight on the United States refugee policy since World War II and speaks

about qualifications to be a refugee and how those have changed as well as legislation governing quotas and procedures.
