Here's your midday brief for Friday, October 24th. I'm Zoe Colkin for the Wall Street Journal.

Annual inflation in the U.S. picked up slightly in September, but not as much as economists

expected. Consumer prices rose 3% from a year earlier, according to the Labor Department.

Slightly hotter than August 2.9% increase, but lower than the 3.1% rise economists surveyed

by the Wall Street Journal forecast. However, government data shows inflation remains

a sticky issue with price increases above where policymakers want them. Month over month,

prices rose 0.3 percent, below expectations of 0.4%. Core prices, which exclude food and energy

prices, rose 0.2%. General Motors is eliminating more than 200 salary jobs at its suburban Detroit

Tech Center days after the company's stock had surged to a record price following better than

expected earnings. A spokesman said the company is eliminating computer-aided design positions as

part of a strategic restructuring of its overall design engineering team.

The automaker is seeking to offset losses on electric vehicles and reduce the financial burden

of at least $2.3 billion in net tariff costs this year.

And the European Union has charged meta-platforms over its handling of illegal content on Facebook and Instagram,

marking the first such allegation under the Block's flagship online content rules.

The European Commission accused Meta of failing to give users a simple way to flag illegal

content. It also accused the company of not providing adequate tools to appeal its content

moderation decisions. Meta disagreed with any suggestion

it breached the new Digital Services Act and will continue to negotiate with the commission,

with a spokesman saying the company is confident its current solutions match legal requirements.
