This week, the biggest story in finance and business was the beautiful game, football,

biggest soccer clubs announced with great fanfare their plans to form a new breakaway, quote

unquote, Super League. Well, within two days, they were in full retreat as fans revolted,

and politicians from Britain's Boris Johnson to Francis Emmanuel Macron through shade on the whole concept.

Liam Proud and Peter Thow Larson were all over this story, not least because of their teams,

Arsenal and Manchester United, which were part of the action. But there's almost nobody who was

involved in this process, mainly the club owners and J.P. Morgan, which was financing the deal,

that come out smelling like anything good.

But the idea may not be totally dead yet. As Liam wrote, the financial appeal of a U.S.

style sporting cartel remains irresistible for the owners of teams like Real Madrid, Juventus,
