Welcome to the lead. I'm Jake Tapper and we begin this week with the coronavirus death toll in the U.S.

standing at a staggering 40,000. To be precise, it's 40,931. This same time,

last week, the death toll was roughly 23,000, so that's roughly a doubling of the number of lives lost, a huge
