Good morning, everyone. I'm Kate Baldwin. It's Monday, April 6th. Here are the five things you need to know to start your day.

0:10.0

Number one, the rescue. It was welcome news on Sunday. An injured airman was rescued and safe following a dangerous mission to find him deep inside Iran. He'd been on the ground alone for two days after his fighter jet was shot down,

0:25.6

and there are now new satellite images circulating,

0:28.6

showing the crater at the point of impact where the F-15 crashed Friday.

0:33.6

Two airmen were on board, both ejected a pilot and a weapons systems officer.

0:40.3

The pilot was located and rescued that same day, but the other officer was not and had to hide in nearby mountains to avoid capture by encroaching Iranian forces.

0:49.3

The mission to get him involved hundreds of American military and intelligence personnel, including Special Operations Forces, who went in to bring him out.

0:58.0

Part of the operation involved the CIA, even mounting a deception campaign inside Iran,

1:04.0

that circulating information that both crew members had already been recovered in order to throw off the IRGC.

1:10.0

The U.S. military conducted strikes in the area to keep Iranian forces at bay.

1:14.9

Officials say that the president was watching all along from the situation room.

1:19.5

Now the downing of this jet, along with Iran's ability to strike another American plane

1:23.5

and a U.S. helicopter assisting in the rescue mission, seemed to undercut the president's claim of air dominance over Iran.

1:30.6

He's holding a press conference later today about it all.

1:34.3

Number two, the new deadline. On the heels of that rescue, President Trump is now issuing a new ultimatum to Iran.

1:42.3

Make a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or else. His previously

1:46.6

issued deadline was set to expire today, but yesterday in a profanity-laced post on social media,

1:52.8

the president extended that to tomorrow, Tuesday. And you can see it for yourself right here,

1:58.3

saying Tuesday would be power plant day and bridge day all wrapped up in one in Iran,

2:03.6

demanding that they open the strait or you'll be living in hell.

2:08.6

Iran, though, says that's not happening unless it is fully compensated for war damages and also said this.

2:15.6

Our armed forces have made it clear that in case Iran's infrastructure is attacked,
