The UK wants to be Trade Friends with Europe again.

Let's begin in Germany, where the UK's Prime Minister Sir Kir Stormer is meeting the German

Chancellor Olaf Schultz to begin negotiations on a new treaty between the UK and Germany.

It has an emphasis on trade and defence. The BBC's Henry

Zefman is in Berlin. In general, this is about continuing the change of mood in

the UK's relationship with Europe since Labour entered government in July.

The Prime Minister is using that reset word again that we've heard practically whenever

he's met a European leader over the past few weeks. He says he wants to fix the broken

relationships that the UK has, he argues, with its European counterparts. But there's

something specific as well. Today,

Skirstama and Olaf Schultz are going to launch negotiations on a treaty, a treaty between

the UK and Germany, which they say will cover a deepening of trade ties, more defence

cooperation and also actions to tackle illegal immigration. But that doesn't mean

unpicking any element of the UK's existing

overarching deal with the European Union which of course previous Conservative

government spent so many years negotiating. I think the question for

Kairestarma and for his government is what more they can achieve in terms of ties

with Germany while not touching that overarching deal with Europe.

Well they say they want to sign this treaty within six months.
