Until a few years ago, when I heard the word troll, I thought of the ugly monsters that hit under bridges and waited to bash you with their wooden clubs.

But now that pretty much everyone I know spends a lot of time in front of their screens, working or socializing or just basically living. That has changed.

The pandemic forced much of the world to take their lives virtual. Our work, our social commitments and our relationships were mostly carried out through screens.

Yes, society was already pretty reliant on them before this. But now it is truly the norm.

Since then, many have found it hard to interact with others in person. The anonymity of sitting behind a screen and living your life is for some a much more comfortable place to exist.

And thanks to social media, YouTube, Reddit and multiplayer video games, it's a given that you'll come across a troll in your time online.

Trolling, a form of online harassment used to be dismissed as relatively harmless. But the so-called keyboard warriors have progressively become a force by causing devastating heartache and conflict across social media platforms.

Their words and actions are sometimes so vicious that we end up reading about it in the news. And in its most sinister forms, online harassment can have deadly consequences.

December 28, 2018, was one of those times.
