Summary

On this week’s More or Less, Ruth Alexander looks at the numbers involved with the two world cups that are going on at the moment. Are more men than women watching the Women’s World Cup and how accurate is the Cricket World Cup rule of thumb that suggests if you double the score after 30 overs you get a good estimate of the final innings total? 0:49.4

Take that, Alex Morgan.

0:52.4

Seems a poor consolation, but I must say I am a bit surprised as...

1:01.8

Both those things are true.

But on the other hand, the game kicked off at lunchtime for American viewers, but it was evening peak viewing time in England.

1:10.4

Also, BBC One is the most watched channel in the UK, where it was shown on Fox in the USA, which is only the fourth most watched channel.

1:18.8

Kate, tell us more, what else have you discovered looking at these TV audience figures?

1:22.6

So I was interested to compare how the gender split of the UK TV audience, the women's world cup, this year, compares with last year's men's world cup.

1:31.6

Interesting. So where are the more women are watching because it's women playing?

1:35.6

Or I suppose men not watching because it isn't men playing?

1:39.6

So we got the BBC audience researchers to look into this for us, and they found the gender split for football TV audiences is actually the same across both world cups.
