Summary

In his weekly clinical update Dr. Griffin discusses modelling the adjustment of COVID-19 response and exit from dynamic zero-COVID in China, canine real-time detection of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the context of a mass screening event, two masks can be worse than one: N95 respirator failure caused by an overlying face mask, airflow patterns in double-occupancy patient rooms may contribute to roommate-to-roommate transmission of severe SARS-CoV-2, clinical validation of a novel T-Cell receptor sequencing assay for identification of recent or prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity against SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sub-lineages is reduced in convalescent sera, regardless of the infecting variant, VV116 versus Nirmatrelvir–Ritonavir for oral treatment of Covid-19, Nirmatrelvir plus Ritonavir for early COVID-19 in a U.S. health system, Molnupiravir plus usual care versus usual care alone as early treatment for adults with COVID-19 at increased risk of adverse outcomes, higher dose corticosteroids in hospitalized COVID-19 patients with hypoxia but not requiring ventilatory support, FDA approves Roche’s Actemra (tocilizumab) for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized adults, structural brain changes in post-acute COVID-19 patients with persistent olfactory dysfunction, persistent post–COVID-19 smell loss is associated with immune cell infiltration and altered gene expression in olfactory epithelium, epidemiology of long COVID in US adults, persistent symptoms and sequelae after SARS-CoV-2 infection not requiring hospitalization, and outpatient treatment of Covid-19 with metformin, ivermectin, and fluvoxamine and the development of Long Covid over 10-month follow-up. This week in virology, the podcast about viruses, the kind that make you sick.

From micro TV, this is twiv this week in virology episode 970 recorded on December 29th,

0:19.9

2022. I'm Vincent Racken yellow and you're listening to the podcast all about viruses. Joining me today

0:27.4

from New York, Daniel Griffin. Hello, everyone. Well, Daniel, that's the end of 2022, our last update

0:36.6

will drop on the 31st, right? It's perfect timing, right? To end end of the year with a clinical

0:45.0

update. It's been quite a year and I would venture to say that next year will also be quite a year,

0:52.4

because viruses don't go anywhere. They really don't, right? I mean, I think we were all getting ready

0:57.2

for a little bit of quiet. I think that was wishful thinking. And as we'll see today, a lot to

1:03.7

share here at the end of 2022. So let's start right off. At the last minute, I changed my quotation

1:11.9

because of some disturbing news. So my quotation, success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance,

1:20.4

learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

1:27.9

And that's Palae. So unfortunately, on the day, we're recording. It was announced that Palae died

1:34.8

at age 82. And the world certainly feels diminished without him. He was, well, growing up, I loved

1:42.0

the game of football or soccer, as we call it here in the States. And you know, he was definitely

1:48.5

a figure that I looked up to. And you know, not just a fantastic footballer, but just an individual

1:56.5

who really demonstrated perseverance, hard work. He made a quotation at one point, you know,

2:02.8

about soccer players are not born. Soccer players are created. And really, that's what this

2:07.6

quotation is about. You've got to really work hard to reach a level that he reached.

2:12.4

But let's get right into it. So measles, perhaps people heard the report of the massive measles

2:20.5

outbreak in India. As of November, India had recorded 12,773 cases of measles so far, according to

2:31.6

the WHO. The revival of measles in India, mostly in four large cities, is felt to be happening because

2:39.3

millions of children didn't get vaccinated in 2020, going to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19
