From micro TV, this is TWIV, this week in virology, episode 1044, recorded on September 14,

0:20.4

2020-23. I'm Vincent Racken-Ello, and you're listening to the podcast all about viruses.

0:27.6

Joining me today from New York, Daniel Griffin. Hello, everyone. So Daniel, should everybody

0:34.7

over six months of age get the new booster? Well, we will certainly be discussing that.

0:39.7

All right, I can't wait. I'm sure you're waiting for my sage advice, Vincent. But let's start

0:48.1

with my quotation. Let us remember, one book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the

0:55.7

world, and that's by Malala. And for a lot of folks, it's tied back to school. And so I thought

1:03.3

that was appropriate for this time of year. And also, what else is on everyone's mind? Influenza,

1:09.6

I'm sure. And I actually really like this. I don't know if our listeners have heard about the

1:15.3

wild-to-mild campaign for flu vaccines. And I'm going to leave a link in, but Brenda Goodman

1:22.4

wrote a really nice piece about this in CNN Health. And I'm pleased to see the messaging is much

1:28.4

better here. So just let me read the beginning of this piece, because I think this really,

1:34.4

we've missed the point on, I think, a lot of communication. So some Americans have given up

1:39.5

on flu shots because almost everyone remembers the season when they got one and then got sick anyway.

1:46.2

Right. So now the U.S. CDC wants to reset expectations about what these annual vaccines can

1:55.2

and can't do. So it's rolling out new ads. It hopes we'll increase confidence in the vaccines with

2:01.0

a clear straightforward message. The flu vaccine won't keep a person from getting sick, but it will

2:08.3

tame the infection, taking it from wild to mild. And they've actually, they've quoted Bill Schaffner.

2:17.3

He's an ID doc down at Vanderbilt. With these respiratory viruses, flu included, the vaccines

2:23.2

aren't very good at preventing mild disease. They're much better at preventing the serious

2:27.8

complications. And I think we have not been very clear in presenting that information.
