Summary

Twins wasn't technically Arnold Schwarzenegger's first foray into comedy, but it was the first time he was deliberately playing against type after establishing himself as an icon in the action genre. He also knew this was all a little outside his wheelhouse, so he really stacked the deck when it came to the director, his co-stars, and an unlikely mentor that helped him hone his comedic chops.

Topics include: an investigation into this film's unusual connection to Suburban Commando, how Twins wound up netting Arnold a bigger payday than any of his previous movies, some surprising evidence that Cormac McCarthy may have been a huge fan of this film, whether or not this much backstory was required to justify the pretty straightforward premise, the long in development sequel, and more!

Thank you. And I'm Carlos. And today we're revisiting Twins. Although Twins was not Arnold Schwarzenegger's first appearance in a comedy, it was his first big

0:59.2

comedic role after establishing himself as a movie star and as an icon of the action genre,

1:05.1

the first time he was intentionally having some fun with his persona. And the desire to do that

1:10.8

stretched back several years.

1:12.8

But to Arnold's credit, he knew stuff like this was way outside his wheelhouse and that he wasn't

1:18.2

really ready for it yet. And then partially because of his interest in comedy, he wound up having

1:23.5

this really unlikely friendship with Milton Burrell, and he took every opportunity to pick

1:29.2

Burrell's brain about writing and performing jokes. He was really dedicated to honing those

1:34.4

skills. So there was actually a pretty long road to this falling into place. This wasn't something

1:40.0

that was randomly offered to him. This was something he pursued. And it was after meeting with

1:45.2

director Ivan Reitman, a guy Arnold really respected because of films like Stripes and Ghostbusters,

1:51.3

that's when he found his next big ally in all of this. Because after spending some time with

1:56.9

Arnold, Reitman decided there was an innocence and a sweetness to him that hadn't been

2:01.8

showcased in any of his roles up to that point. They decided they wanted to work together,

2:06.8

and Arnold put out the word that he was looking to do a comedy. Several scripts were generated

2:11.5

and came across his desk, and Twins is the one he decided he wanted to do. The very definition of a high concept premise,
