Hello and welcome to the Retro Hour podcast episode number 91. Your weekly dose of retro gaming

0:36.1

and technology news with me Dan Wood. And me, Ravi Abbott. Now you're alright, Ravi. I know you had a bit of a meltdown in the kitchen upstairs. Oh my God, this is a disgrace. You know, the packaging on sweets, they're really reducing it these days. My rollo's, I only got about five in a packet. It was awful. I'm in a rollo rage down.

0:55.0

Because we've got a little tug box upstairs in this building that we record the show in. That, you know, occasionally we may dabbling. I'm not, you know, not suggesting that I each... Every week, every week. But yeah, you've got a pack of rolloes, and it literally was about half the size that I remember. It's awful, you know, like Mars bars are tiny nowadays, and Torbarones, there's this massive gap to make it apparently easier for eating. I'm just somehow doubt, like you could just snap them off before. I can see you think of this starting like a sweet podcast. A sweet, a sweet revolution. We actually put a picture on Facebook as well. I love the comment from David Hayes. It goes, I don't think there are 16 bits in there, maybe 8 bits. Ah, I love it. So this show is not about sweet, so it is about video games. But it is about, you know, retro games, stuff from back in the day. And we do cover like, you know, classic consoles and computers. But if we're talking really vintage, it's all about the arcades, isn't it?

1:44.5

Oh, totally. And the guest today we have is probably the king of the arcades, or the referee

1:49.6

of the arcades would say. And it's Walter Day of Twin Galaxies. He's a kind of father of

1:54.7

competitive gaming. Now, you may have seen movies like King of Kong. Well, Reckett Ralph.

1:59.5

There is a character in Reckett Ralph that's a tribute to him,

2:02.6

isn't the referee in there? And he's essentially the guy that got competitive gaming, high scores,

2:09.2

video games in the Guinness Book of Records. Well, everyone was going around all these different

2:13.6

times and they were saying, oh, my mate's the best at Pac-Man in the world. And no one was keeping a kind of chart of this. And Walter was one of the guys that started it. Yeah. Well, he essentially became the official scorekeeper for arcades video games. Yeah, the scorekeeper for gaming. Yeah, around the world for decades. So, I mean, I'm sure if you, you've got any interest in retro gaming or the arcades, you'll be familiar with Walter Day. An absolute legend, and it's amazing that he's agreed to be our special guest this week. And Walter will be coming up plenty of tales about those absolutely, you know, the golden age of arcades really, wasn't it? Back in the early 80s. Oh, yeah. And those competitions were massive, weren't they? You remember some of them were televised? Yeah.

2:56.8

They had like Life magazine, Time magazine involved. It was crazy. And also, there's some interesting stuff about movies like King of Kong. We'll find out, you know, was that really accurate? You know,

3:00.9

did it really represent it well? Well, even kind of like modern retro films, like pixels,

3:07.0

that the whole thing about pixels is that they have

3:09.4

the old arcade competition guys and they'll come back and have to do it against yeah i'm not

3:14.4

going to explain the story but it's kind of relating i'd rather hear you explain to them watch it to be

3:18.7

fair having watched that film but yeah but it's relating that kind of old gamingness to the kind
