Summary

Perfectionism stops people from completing their work - yes, but even worse… it often stops people from beginning their work. Today, I’m sharing an insightful excerpt on the perfectionist attitude from Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic. Hello, hello, everyone. This is Tanya Dalton, owner of Inquell Press, and I'm here to give you

0:11.1

another episode of The Weekender, a mini episode to help you end your week on the right note.

0:17.7

This week on the podcast, we talked about the pursuit of perfection. So for this week's

0:22.1

many episode, I thought I would share an excerpt from Elizabeth Gilbert's book, Big Magic, where I

0:27.8

think she sums up the issue with perfectionism so nicely. Here's what she says. Perfectionism

0:34.4

stops people from completing their work. Yes, but even worse, it often stops people from beginning their work.

0:41.3

Perfectionists often decide in advance that the end product is never going to be satisfactory,

0:56.1

virtue. In job interviews, for instance, people will sometimes advertise their perfectionism as if it is

1:03.1

their greatest selling point, taking pride in the very thing that is holding them back from enjoying

1:09.1

their fullest possible engagement with creative

1:11.7

living. They wear their perfectionism like a badge of honor, as if it signals high taste

1:17.0

and exquisite standards. But I see it differently. I think perfectionism is just high-in

1:22.9

hoketure version of fear. I think perfectionism is just fear in fancy shoes and a mint coat,

1:30.4

pretending to be elegant when it's actually just terrified. Because underneath that shiny

1:36.6

veneer, perfectionism is nothing more than a deep existential angst that says again and again,

1:43.8

I am not good enough and I never will be good enough.

1:48.0

Perfectionism is a particular evil lure for women, who I believe hold themselves to an even

1:53.2

higher standard of performance than do men. Holding back their ideas, holding back their contributions,

2:00.0

holding back their leadership and their

2:02.1

talents. Too many women still seem to believe that they are not allowed to put themselves forward
