that she's not forgot and that she's valued to her family and I want people to know.

Today's story is one that actually gives me a lump in my throat every time I think about

it and I think that's in part because it touches on issues that we can never talk too much

about.

For today's story I spoke with Kari Scott Haney who lives with her husband Rico in Milwaukee

Wisconsin.

Within the first few moments of my conversation with Kari on the phone, I learned a very

interesting fact about her heritage.

I'm a Ojibwe nation, that's my mom's heritage and I am black, my dad's side who was also

mixed with Cherokee but I didn't grow up on the reservation.

I didn't know our cultural beliefs or traditions or our language even.

And another important thing to know about Kari is that she herself had five children.

I have three daughters and two sons.

As in many marriages with prior children, the new spouse plays a big role in raising the

children as well.

When Kari met Rico, Sierra her oldest was 15 and a half and Audrey was 12 years old.
