By August 1, Germany had declared war on Russia.

They had lost territory to France in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War of 1871,

and they wanted it back.

In late August, on their way to France's northern border, Germany pushed through Belgium.

The small nation was quickly captured and by August 20th, it was in full occupation.
