KGB Operative Vladimir Putin's report from Dresden, 5th October,

sent to Moscow, C.C CC to Stasi Headquarters.

1,100 hours, observation post 77A apartment opposite train station.

As soon as the news got out that the sealed trains to the west were passing through Dresden, disruptive elements began massing here.

The crowd are young scruffy, the usual type, see photographs attached to this report.

There is little sign of

organization that I would characterize the action as spontaneous and chaotic.

1500 hours I estimate 2,500 in the station and approximately 20,000 in the

surrounding streets. They are chanting the last train to freedom.

My informant, MX12, positioned inside the station,

reports that some of the crowd tried to board the trains

and attacked the police who stopped them.

According to MX12, the folks polixai colonel in charge instructed his men not to shoot.

It is impossible to ascertain if he was taking his own initiative here or if this was an order from higher up

2,100 hours. I met a false politzai very shaken up I bought him a drink receipt attached and he

told me 45 of their men was seriously injured in the fighting in

in Spielplatz I saw a police car that had been overturned

and set on fire. It was still smoldering.

2200 hours. I telephoned the commander of our Soviet tank regiment stationed in Dresden.
