My father gave me a lot of advice as a young criminal defense attorney.

But nothing resonated more than when he told me that there is no client more terrifying

to represent than the client that is actually innocent.

Yes, if I'm representing someone that is being accused of committing heinous acts against

others, stepping into that cell with that person is unnerving.

As various thoughts enter and exit my mind, of the possibilities that could potentially

occur in that first encounter, ranging from the extreme to the mundane.

And it's these clients who represent the living, breathing examples of the true depths of

human depravity, which cause most people to ask the question, how?

How can you represent that monster?

And the answer is one that we have given many times throughout the first two seasons

of the podcast, and which I give all the time everywhere that I appear.

Because with those clients, I am protecting the principles of the Constitution.

I'm making sure that my client has a clear understanding of the process and their rights

under the law.

I'm making sure that my client is receiving a fair trial, and I'm making sure that the

state and law enforcement are playing by the rules.

I call it policing the police.

As long as I do this, case in and case out, I am able to look at myself in the mirror and

know that I did my job.

And it's because of this approach that there is no need for Alice and Ory to ask our clients

whether or not they did what they are being accused of.
