The thing about being a criminal defense attorney is that you're typically representing

someone that has experienced the absolute worst day of their life.

Yes, there are clients that are sociopaths who may not consider whatever heinous actions

they may have taken to get themselves arrested to be the worst day of their lives.

Hell, some, if they are twisted enough, may even enjoy it.

But for the vast majority, that is not the case.

No, for these folks, there is typically some underlying reason that has driven them to

break the law.

Whether it be poverty, anger, depression, the need for revenge, the heat of the moment,

bad judgment, alcohol, or drug use, a folly of youth, or some type of mental issue.

There is always an underlying cause, because never forget, life is brutal.

Whether the cause may be, there is very little room in the criminal statutes that allows

for a defense attorney to argue the underlying cause, which may or may not justify their

clients' actions.

If someone is starving, do they not have some sort of justification in stealing a loaf

of bread?

Maybe in theory, but in the eyes of the law, they do not.

Now we have seen recent stories about fathers and mothers that have killed those that have

sexually abused their children, and while most of us can relate and maybe even agree

with why they did it, there is no room in the law for vigilanteism.
