Summary

When a guitar string is plucked, the note will spontaneously resonate with another guitar nearby—provided they are tuned the same. In today’s episode, Martha uses this metaphor to explore the ways that life creates resonances for us when we tune ourselves in certain ways. Martha gives tips for tuning yourself to joy, if this is the frequency you’d like to see matched in your life. (Originally aired: August 1, 2021)

Welcome to the Gathering Pod, the audio version of my weekly gathering room broadcast.

I'm Martha Beck.

Let's talk about today's topic, which is tuning yourself to joy, not turning yourself to

0:16.4

joy, but tuning.

0:18.7

The reason I'm talking about this is that I recently went into a spate of new readings.

0:23.9

What happens to me? I don't know if this happens to you. I suddenly become obsessed with a certain type of book.

0:31.3

Like when I was working on the creativity stuff for the practical way-finding program that is just finished,

0:37.2

I got obsessed with creativity

0:39.4

books, all the latest research on it, innovation, the brain science of creativity. And then I kind of

0:45.8

started hitting the same things over and over. And then suddenly everything was like all about

0:51.3

energy and the physical body, especially since I've got me Jesus foot happening. So I've been reading about energy in the physical body, especially since I've got majesus foot happening.

0:56.5

So I've been reading about energy and one thing I read that made that for some reason

1:01.5

resonated literally with me more than it has in other ways is the idea that if you have two

1:08.3

guitars in a room and they're tuned the same way, so they're tuned to the same exact pitch, and you put them across the room from each other, and then you pluck, say, the G string on one of them, the G string on the other one will also begin to vibrate and make a sound. So it's actually being pulled into action by the resonance of

1:31.0

the other guitar. And I know that this is real. I mean, I'm obsessed with the idea that everything

1:37.0

is energy. I really believe that. And yet every time I'm reminded that energy tunes to other

1:43.1

energy, it's more, it's a little more of a surprise for some reason.

1:48.7

And one of the things that I've been doing with my foot, my through and through spike foot, is something that Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor told me to do if you were here a couple of weeks ago.

1:59.7

She was on talking about her brain science book

2:02.1

and she'll be back soon to talk about it more. Oh, that's going to be such a good time, you guys.

2:07.4

A couple of weeks from now. August 22nd. Anyway, back to the thing. She said, your foot's been

2:13.7

maimed. So every day you put your two hands close to your foot, but not touching it.
